MEIBC: pension and provident fund: mandate required

MEIBC: pension and provident fund: mandate required

Dear Steel Industry employer

The pension- and provident fund agreements of the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC) will expire on 30 April 2021.

A demand has been received from trade unions to extend the period of operation of these agreements for another 10 years without any other substantive amendments to the agreements.

Historically, these agreements have been extended for 5 year periods at a time.

NEASA has been a signature party to these agreements for a number of years and it is our view that it is not morally justifiable to remove the social benefits of employees.

We do, however, require a mandate from members in this regard.

It should be noted that it is very likely that the Minister of Employment and Labour will extend the operation of these agreements to non-parties in any event. As a result of amended regulations relating to the extension of funding agreements, the minister may extend these types of agreements at the request of a single party to the bargaining council.
