New Report: 7.9 Million Reasons You Should Care About Young Drivers

Did you know that young adults age 16–24 drove more than 155 billion miles in 2017?

Despite media reports to the contrary, young people do care about cars and are engaged with the automotive specialty-equipment industry. Of the 38.4 million people in the United States ages 16–24, 24 million have access to a vehicle and drive. Of these, 7.9 million accessorize, accounting for roughly $7.2 billion in spending in our industry. By age 23, more than 30% modify their vehicle(s) in some way.

Cars are also an important part of their lives: 79% of young accessorizers think that their vehicles help them stay closer to their friends, and one in four belong to a group related to cars on social media.

Want to learn more about young drivers and how you can reach them more effectively? Curious about how they shop? Check out the new “SEMA Young Accessorizers Report” available now at www.sema.org/research.
