Keeping cars roadworthy: The critical role of parts availability for Motor Body Repairers
Juan Hanekom, National Director of SAMBRA

As South Africa's automotive market continues to expand with diverse vehicle brands, advanced technologies, and new models, access to high-quality parts has become more essential than ever for the repair industry.

The South African Motor Body Repairers’ Association (SAMBRA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), highlights the increasing need for reliable parts supply chains to keep vehicles roadworthy after repairs, accidents, or general wear and tear.

Juan Hanekom, National Director of SAMBRA, explains, “While consumers naturally consider price and features when buying a car, the ease with which parts can be sourced plays a significant role in the vehicle’s long-term viability. In the event of repairs, whether due to collision or mechanical issues, efficient parts availability can make all the difference in ensuring timely and high-quality restorations.”

The Impact of parts availability on quality and safety

Accidents and repairs demand more than skill; they require access to parts that meet Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standards or, where applicable, matching equivalent parts. "For our accredited motor body repairers, having access to these parts is essential," says Hanekom. "Without prompt availability, repair times extend, costs increase, and both safety and vehicle performance can be compromised."

The strength of a brand’s parts supply chain has a direct impact on the ability of repairers to restore vehicles to safe, reliable condition quickly. "Brands that prioritise robust supply chains are supporting not only their customers but also the repair industry that maintains their vehicles," Hanekom explains. He also reminds motorists that with the Competition Commission Guidelines, they now have the option to use equivalent matching parts in cases of limited OEM part availability, making it possible to get back on the road faster while still ensuring safety and performance.

Supply chain resilience matters

Over the past few years, global supply disruptions have affected part availability across industries, and the motor repair sector has felt this impact acutely. “A resilient supply chain is now essential in the repair industry,” says Hanekom. “As we’ve seen, brands with diversified suppliers and strong logistical frameworks have weathered disruptions better, allowing motor body repairers to service clients efficiently. This kind of resilience in a brand’s supply chain adds real value to vehicle ownership in South Africa.”

Ensuring quality repairs, preserving resale value

Reliable part availability not only affects immediate repair times but also influences long-term resale value. Vehicles that have been properly maintained with high-quality parts tend to retain more of their value. For this reason, SAMBRA encourages South African buyers to consider a brand’s supply chain strength and parts availability as they make purchasing decisions.

"In a vehicle’s lifetime, it’s not just the price tag or performance that matters—it’s also the support it receives through high-quality repairs," concludes Hanekom. "A dependable supply chain keeps vehicles safely on the road and helps ensure that owners receive the service and support they deserve. This is especially crucial for those investing in long-term vehicle ownership."
