McLaren has surged into the 2025 Formula One season with one of the strongest cars on the grid, but just how big is their advantage?

Their recent performances suggest they’ve built a package capable of consistently challenging Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes. With a well-balanced car and a potent development plan, McLaren has positioned itself as a true contender.

However, the biggest talking point since the Chinese GP isn’t just the car - it’s Oscar Piastri.

The young Australian has shown flashes of brilliance, often pushing Lando Norris to the limit. While Norris remains the more experienced driver, Piastri’s raw pace and ability to extract performance in high-pressure moments suggest he’s not just a strong number two - he’s a genuine contender.

The question now is: can he outshine Norris and mount his own World Drivers’ Championship challenge?

Of course, McLaren won’t have the advantage forever. Red Bull, despite their struggles, remains a threat with Max Verstappen’s relentless race craft. Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, is pushing forward, while Mercedes is banking on a resurgence with George Russell leading the team .

If any of these teams find extra pace, McLaren’s current lead could evaporate quickly.
