Swedish world champion Johan Kristoffersson, driving a Volkswagen Polo R, defended his Gumtree WRX of SA title at Killarney International Raceway at the weekend in an action-packed final.
The two days of racing drew huge crowds to the famous Cape Town track which was specially adapted for the short-lap, mixed-surface, knockout format of WRX.
Kristofferson’s win in the season finale capped an astonishing year – winning 11 of the 12 events on the championship circuit which began Barcelona in April.
Mattias Ekstrӧm in an Audi A1 took second place in both the Killarney race and the world championship. Behind him, former world champion, Norwegian Petter Solberg crashed out of the final in spectacular fashion when he came together on the dirt with Timmy Hansen.
Gumtree SA GM-Director Claire Cobbledick hailed the success of the event: “We’re delighted to play a key role in bringing such thrilling, world-class motor racing to South African fans. After only two editions, the Gumtree World RX of South Africa is firmly established on the calendar and will be back even better next year.”
