Builds upon significant savings returned to customers in recent fuel relief initiative

A month after unveiling a new partnership, Absa and Shell South Africa have announced a new fuel benefit unlocking up to 60% real cashback on petrol and diesel purchases for motorists, and other benefits, as South Africa ushers in Savings Month.

The initiative launches as households are recovering from a steep three-month fuel price surge amid the introduction of lower fuel tariffs on Wednesday, 1 July 2026.

For the month of July, we are boosting savings with up to 60% real cash back. Motorists who bank with Absa and fill-up at Shell earn double their rewards dependent on their Absa Rewards tier from 1 July 2026. For further value and flexibility, customers can also accrue Shell V+ instant fuel rewards of up to R1 per liter cash back at Shell forecourts and up to 50 cents per liter on qualifying convenience retail purchases countrywide.

The partnership combines Absa Rewards with Shell V+, one of South Africa's fastest-growing fuel loyalty programmes, enabling customers to unlock value across both programmes while enjoying rewards at more than 600 Shell service stations nationwide. From 2026, Absa Rewards members continue to earn up to 30% real cashback when filling up at Shell.

Alicia Raynard, Executive: Absa Rewards said, “While the fuel price decrease in July brought welcome relief, many households are still feeling the effects of a prolonged period of rising mobility costs. This launch comes during Savings Month, at a time when consumers are increasingly using loyalty programmes as a practical way to manage household expenses.”

According to the 2025/26 Truth and BrandMapp Loyalty Whitepaper 48% of respondents confirmed that loyalty programmes influence where they purchase fuel, and 45% of South African consumers place loyalty as their second decision for fuel brand choice, behind location and ahead of staff and fuel preferences.

Raynard added, “For Absa, these shifts reinforce the importance of ensuring that rewards programmes deliver meaningful value to customers. Our partnership with Shell builds on our fuel rewards offering and follows the fuel relief benefit introduced this year, which temporarily increased fuel earn caps across our customer base. Together these initiatives have helped return significant fuel savings to customers during the second quarter of 2026,” Raynard said.

With Shell sites located across major cities, towns and transport corridors, customers can access rewards where they live, work and travel, making savings more convenient and accessible.

Monica Sithole, Mobility Marketing Manager at Shell South Africa said, “For many South Africans, the cost of filling up is not just a routine expense, it is a daily pressure that affects how families live, work and move. Through this partnership with Absa, we're focusing on making a real difference in those everyday moments, helping customers stretch their budgets a little further and derive more value from their fuel spend.”

Absa offers its customers the benefit of two fuel partnerships. “The decision to expand our fuel network through both fuel reward partners reflects a simple reality: customers live, work and travel differently.  By partnering with two iconic fuel brands, Absa is ensuring that customers can access value where it is most convenient and relevant to them,” said Raynard.
