Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf usher in a new era of affordable EV ownership

The Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf mark a significant turning point for electric vehicle accessibility in South Africa.

Where EV ownership was once reserved for luxury price brackets, both models bring full-electric mobility below the R400 000 mark, making it a realistic option for a far broader range of buyers.

Targeted at urban commuters, small families and those looking for an affordable second vehicle, the Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf combine practical hatchback packaging with low running costs, modern technology and all-electric powertrains.

"For the first time, we're seeing EVs compete with mainstream hatchbacks on price, not just technology. That's a significant milestone for South African motorists considering the switch to electric," says Alan Quinn, Chief Product and Innovation Officer, Cars.co.za.

While similarly priced, the two vehicles take slightly different approaches. The Geely E2 places greater emphasis on cabin space, premium interior finishes and technology, offering a wider cabin, larger boot, 60/40 split-folding rear seats and a comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control and forward collision avoidance. By contrast, the BYD Dolphin Surf is the more compact option.

The BYD Dolphin Surf focuses on urban agility and modern styling. Its compact dimensions make it well suited to city driving, although its smaller boot, single-piece folding rear bench and firmer ride compromise practicality compared with its Geely rival.

Performance also favours the Geely. Its rear-mounted electric motor produces 85 kW and 150 Nm, compared with the BYD's 55 kW and 135 Nm front-mounted motor, resulting in stronger acceleration and greater confidence during highway overtaking.

Both models remain highly efficient in urban driving, consuming between 11.0 and 12.5 kWh/100 km, translating to running costs of approximately R36 per 100 km at current electricity prices. Each vehicle also includes a complimentary 7 kW home AC wallbox charger, allowing the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in under three hours.

Priced at R389 900 for the Geely E2 Apex and R395 900 for the BYD Dolphin Surf Dynamic, both vehicles represent a new generation of affordable electric mobility. While the BYD offers agile handling and distinctive styling, the Geely E2 stands out with superior cabin space, higher interior quality, stronger performance and a more comprehensive suite of safety technology, making it the stronger overall ownership proposition.
